Steady As

Privacy policy

Effective 27 October 2026

The Steady As app sends nothing to us. We have no servers, no accounts, no analytics and no ads. Everything stays on your devices and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud account. The one thing that leaves your device is a few positions from each trip, sent to Apple after the trip for its weather and place names.

Location

Steady As uses the location of your Apple Watch, or of your iPhone when you run a trip there, to show your course and speed and to record your trips. The iPhone uses location only while a trip runs, including in the background and on the Lock Screen. Location is processed on your devices. It is never sent to us. The one place it leaves your device is the trip weather and place names, described below.

Your trips

Trips are stored on the device that recorded them. If you use both the watch and the iPhone app, trips and settings are synced directly between your own watch and iPhone.

If you are signed in to iCloud, the iPhone app keeps your trips and settings in your own private iCloud storage, so a new iPhone or a new watch gets them back. This data is stored by Apple in your account. We cannot see it and it never reaches us. You can turn iCloud sync off in the app's Settings, and remove the stored data in your iPhone's iCloud settings.

Deleting the app removes the trips on that device. Trips kept in iCloud stay there until you remove them.

Trip weather and place names

To show the weather on a trip in your log, Steady As asks Apple Weather once, after the trip, for the hours the trip ran. The watch sends the position where the trip started and its start hour. The iPhone also sends one position for each stretch of the trip (a new one about every 15 km) with the hours spent there. To name where a trip started, ended and, for a trip that comes back where it started, where it went, the iPhone asks Apple Maps once for the place at those positions: the start, the end and the trip's longest stop or furthest point. It may also ask Apple Maps for an island near one of those positions, and for the center of the town it is in. Only these positions and times are sent, to Apple, and never to us. The answers are kept on your device. Apple Weather and Apple Maps are covered by Apple's privacy policy.

Apple Health

If you use the Sail profile or turn on logging to Health, Steady As saves sailing workouts and their routes to Apple Health, with your permission. Steady As does not read any data from Health. You can change this at any time in the Health app or in Settings.

While a sailing workout runs on your watch, Apple Health shares it with the Steady As app on your own iPhone, so the trip can show on your iPhone's Lock Screen. This stays between your watch and your iPhone.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, the iPhone app can show one notice when a trip starts on your watch, so you can put the trip on your Lock Screen with one tap. Every notice is made on your iPhone; nothing is sent to us or to anyone else. You can turn it off in your iPhone's Settings, under Notifications.

Exporting

When you choose to export a trip as a GPX file, or all your trips as a Steady As file, it goes only where you send it with the share sheet.
